Bentley to Well
9 intrepid women set out on a day that was less than welcoming after weeks of torrential rain had turned the land to very sloshy mud. But the gods have a sense of humour and had sent a covering of snow to make the walking slightly easier and we set off cheerily
Spirits were high and remained so for the whole day despite being forced to sit outside to eat our lunch
The countryside visible through the winter mists was lovely and hot baths on returning home felt well deserved
A 31 from London, beyond Farnham: Turn into Bentley village (not towards the station). At cross roads turn right and past the Star Inn to the village pond, turn left immediately after the pond and then right through gates into the Kingsmill Pavilion car park.
Morning: a three hour walk partly following St Swithin’s Way and with good views over Hampshire.
Afternoon: one and a half hours’ duration. A bit of road to the track of Husseys Lane and then through fields picking up outward route again to make our way back to Bentley
Chequers Inn at Well. Quite a smart pub but they cater for walkers and will prepare sandwiches for us. Pre-order on the day. Comfortable covered seating area outside if with dogs.
A walk along ancient tracks, grassy uplands across fields and through woodland and one long bridleway. Quite a few stiles. Muddy.
Although there is a station at Bentley there are no convenient trains, so please use the directory and Yahoo Group for lift shares.
