Hever Castle

Thank-you Bronwen for yesterday's SL to Hever Castle. Just one hour away from Clapham Junction, plus a mile or so of footpath and a little bit of road walking, to be in the glorious grounds of Hever Castle. Autumnal colours getting started, an ancient lovely castle ablaze with flaming Virginia Creeper, beautiful Italianate Gardens ornamented with urns, carvings, pillars and vases collected by the late Lord Aster, a huge lake and extensive woodland walks. We decided on lunch, by nipping just outside the grounds in 'The Wheatsheaf' pub where I'm told, King Henry V111 & Anne Bolyen often lunched on Falafel and Beetroot baguettes!
Train Victoria 9.54 clapham junction 10.01
change East Croydon 10.10 for 10.22 train to Hever arrive 10.49
he train goes to Hever station and there is a nice walk up through the fields to the Castle and garden.
Once we get to the gardens Bronwen suggests we establish a central meeting point (with coffee) and then we can discuss and choose the various options for the day. These can include visiting the castle or gentle walking around the gardens or even more strenuous walking around the extensive grounds. The choice is yours and weather dependent.
Refreshments can be bought on site, but picnics are very suitable, and even a pub just outside the gates
Picnic, or cafe or even pub
Hever castle is the childhood home of Anne Boleyn with a beautiful modernisation by William Astor , with large gardens.
There is an entry fee waived for RHS members, but not for other card holders.
