Meeting Point:
Benfleet station
Distance:
9.5miles
Maps:
Landranger 175
Travel:

9.18 from Fenchurch Street to Benfleet, arriving 10.02. Or join the train at West Ham from the District Line at 9.27. We think train is the better option but if you want to drive there is NCP parking immediately to the north of the station.
return 4 trains per hour to Fenchurch street

Route:

Morning 5.5 miles. Bridge across to the island then the sea wall westwards with rough grassland, reed beds, lagoons and salt marshes. Then eastwards to the outskirts of urban Canvey and through to The Lake with the Oyster Fleet at its eastern end for lunch.

After lunch, 3.5 miles, south to Canvey Esplanade and spectacular views of the Thames Estuary, already over two miles wide. Then eastward along the sea wall and, tide permitting, out to the salt marsh, shell sand and shingle of Canvey Point, the eastern tip of the island, with views along to Southend and its mile-long pier, and far beyond. Back to Benfleet station by bus with four trains back to London every hour.

Lunch:

At the Oyster Fleet, with an extensive range of bar food.

Notes:

1. Shoes suited to mud desirable, particularly if the tide allows us to go out to Canvey Point.
2. No need to pre-order lunch, but please let Martin know before the 14th if you are thinking of coming as numbers make booking a table desirable.
3. There are buses back to Benfleet Station from the Oyster Fleet for anyone only wanting to do the morning.
