Selborne Circular
There was a slight element of battle scarred troops who arrived back at the car park last Sunday having fought with brambles, insect life etc on a rather jolly walk. However this is not a comment on the skills of our leader but a reflection on the response of the wild life to the recent inclement weather and to show us just how wild and wonderful the English countryside can be.
It was a lovely walk over the rich and rolling Hampshire countryside with the bonus of a beer and music festival at our lunch time stop at the No Name pub in the middle of a field heavens no where
Thank you Stephen
Car rendezvous only. Take the A3 from London to the junction with the B3006, follow signs to Selborne and look out for The Selborne Arms on the left once inside the village. Probably 1hr 15mins from Hammersmith on Sunday morning but, perhaps allow 90 minutes. Turn left just before Selbourne Arms in village Main Street for car park.
Jane Austen and Gilbert White country (no time for the museums unless you would like to depart at lunchtime). Quite hilly but the worst climb is at the start up the shortish zigzag path to Selborne Common. The worst of the escarpments and inclines avoided on the walk to Priors Dean and back past the edges of Hawkley. Tremendous views over Hampshire and gentle, secluded valleys.
The White Horse, Priors Dean, Hampshire GU32 1DA. (01420 588387). Historically known as the Pub With No Name. Produces beer under the latter brand. Wide range of food from restaurant cuisine to pub grub, sandwiches included. If raining a small, inside bar will be available to LWG, if sunny outside. Dogs on leads welcome.
Dogs on leads is the advice all day as this is sheep country with lots of newborn lambs around. Unless there’s heavy rain in early June the well-worn paths should be solid. There are some stiles but none too tricky. One short stop should allow the purchase of farm produce, like delicious jams but bring fivers and coins
