Hindhead
This was a 13 mile walk disguised as a 11 mile walk but greatly enjoyed by all who talk part
The sun was shining and spirits were high as 16 of us and two dogs set out only slightly put out by a delayed start due to the closure of the Hindhead tunnel which necessitate some re routing for car drivers
The start gave us a good view of the Punch Bowl with mist within its stoop. Various theories were swapped as to the origin of the name Later walking toook us over Hanckley Common and its golf course famed as a popular site for filming and MOD activities including the building of a wall for the Canadians to practice D-day landings (This has been appropriated by various fauna and flora to provide a unique habitat) and on to the Duke of Cambridge pub for lunch where we were treated like royalty i.e. very well
After lunch a few made a sensible decision to cut the walk short The rest of us marched back to Hindhead when the realization of 13 miles began to dawn upon us as we trekked up the final rather long hill back to the car park But we were all happy and well fortified with snacks fron our gallant leader But tea back at the car park was VERY welcome
There are no convenient stations so please use the Directory to find a lift. From London on A3 turn left immediately after Hindhead Tunnel (A333). Go round two mini roundabouts following signs for Devil's Punch Bowl and then just NT acorn. Parking is free for members of the National Trust who display their membership card. Please would members bring their cards so no one has to pay.
a.m. East side of DPB, Thursley, Hankley Common, Tilford
p.m. Greensand Way, Thursley, West side of DPB

Dogs welcome in the conservatory, and only very muddy boots not allowed.
The Devil's Punch Bowl is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a natural amphitheatre which the A3 used to climb around but that section of road is now closed due to the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel in July 2011.
Sandy paths in one section making it slower going. One steep climb after lunch. Very few stiles.
We will leave promptly at 9.15am but loos and coffee available in the cafe from 9.00am. If planning to join at lunchtime please phone leader before the start of the walk to order food. We aim to be at the pub by 12.15pm
Thanks to Jo Winstanley who reccied the walk but is unable to lead due to a back problem.
And to Jane and Richard Pask for standing in for Jo.
